This is taken from a phrase coined by church members grateful for the work of Mary Baker Eddy (The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, p. 52:6-7). Many members even called Mrs Eddy “Mother” for a time. At her request that practice was discontinued, and she has since been known as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and leader of the Christian Science movement. The church she founded in Boston is still called The Mother Church.
So while we wholeheartedly celebrate all those who are amazing mums on May 8, we can also gratefully cherish the spiritual quality of God’s mother-love expressed by family members, friends, fellow workers and professional carers who strive to live “the highest type of womanhood” as healers.
